Friday 19th May. Hotel Peristil, Split.

 Last breaky on the boat after a great city tour last night. Very interesting  history and I know nothing of the Diocletians. They are the ones that built this amazing palace area. Influence again of Greeks and of course the Romans. In fact the guy who became emperor and built this rose up thru the Roman ranks.  This is UNESCO protected, was bombed in WW2 as the Nazis were here and supported.  But still so much remains from 305AD!! He even decorated with statues from Egypt to show off his power. 

We had our last dinner on the boat and it was again delicious.  We had a last bridge game and I headed to pack. Fortunately the NZ couple and a Canadian couple are staying nearby so I found my hotel easily after checking yesterday without my case. I'm inside the old walls of the palace. 3rd floor up and no lift, but they delivered my case. Hans and Christine from NZ are close by in a cute little apartment and Roz and Dennis from Canada are not far away either. So we checked out one another's places, then walked around, had lunch then took a tuk tuk tour. We'll  meet again at 7 to play some bridge and tomorrow may head off on a bus tour.

    Hi Lorraine, Don Hinkle, we had a 45 minute transfer, got to our hotel & walked around. Like Dubrovnik & Split has a walled old town with a 13 th century cathedral in the center & a town square. We toured the Town Museum, had a nice lunch & had a 75 minute guided walking tour. After dinner we will be tuning in early as we have a 5:15 AM transfer to the airport. Fortunately it's only a 10 minute ride.

    A most very pleasant day of weather, wandering, ancient history and pretty views. Fascinating how the “new” has encroached upon that 4th Century palace. The pale escarpment that runs along the coast is so distinctively that part of the world. A unique hotel! Thanks for sharing.

Saturday/Sunday, 17th and !8th May 2025

 Saturday was a very long day, that really bled into Sunday as I travelled through numerous  time zones.  I left Melbourne  on Saturday at midday and flew to Auckland.  Change of planes to LA. Business class again was delightful but Air NZ doesn't seem to have a big choice of movie, not a huge problem when you can lie down etc!! Once we headed to LA, I'd  eaten enough so had my bed made up and went to sleep. Woke for a delicious  breakfast and then into LA. Collected my luggage after 2 hours waiting in lines for security.  Quickly through and handed  case in for Denver.  Then the route march to terminal 7. 45 mins later I arrived in a lather and thru security again for my flight. Ticket wouldn't register so an anxious wait while they fixed it. Finally into Denver but no luggage. Had to wait another hour for it to arrive and then find the shuttle bus to take me to my accommodation.  Finally fell into bed at 10pm!!! Up for early shutt...

Sunday 8th June 2025. Edinburgh and now Oban, Scotland.

 Arrived bright and early into Edinburgh and it felt like we were in a big warehouse. Certainly not flash, but so easy to get into Scotland,  took no time at all. Put my case into storage and took a bus into town. Bus driver was great and told me about the tourist spots. I walked around in the sun and checked out the castle and all the other monuments.  I even went to church and listened to the choir. Got back on the bus back to the airport and headed over to the Hampton hotel where I was getting picked up. Michael  had texted me to confirm pick up so all good.  Picked up with others and 3 hours later we arrived in Oban. Beautiful scenery.  The boat , the Flying Dutchman,  is much more rustic than all my other trips but food is great and again very well organised and of course this time I have my mate Marion from Melbourne and we've already paled up with Cathryn from Canada. We're drinking gin and tonics b4 we head back to the boat.  40 kms tomorr...

Tuesday 10th June, 2025. Crinan to Jura.

 Boy I slept well after a big day. I was sooo cold and wet but recovered well after a hot shower and into dry clothes. Everything  was sopping and it was hard to find where to dry everything.  Fortunately today was sunny!! So we hung our clothes outside on the boat. They sailed after our bike ride. We did 27kms along the  Crinan canal and even watched a boat go in and out the locks. Ahh it took me back. A beautiful bike ride today. No hills and the sun was glorious.   We had lunch at Kilmartin and I had soup again. And an amazing hot chocolate.  We then did a few burial sites and some stones( much smaller than Stonehenge) We rode back to Crinan and off we sailed to Jura. Lovely smooth sailing and we played Phase 10. We sat outside to eat our delicious dinner( the food is wonderful on the boat) Unfortunately the midges came in so inside. We're  now over at the pub to check out our grog of choice!!! Beautiful  sunny weather predicted for tomorr...
