Monday 24th April . Giethoorn, the Venice of the North.

An early start out of Zwolle in cold, wet and windy weather. It rained the whole way with Deb getting very wet. They are definitely a well oiled team that works so well together.  Under bridges and one sluice today and a mooring at Giethoorn. It was quiet on the water and no one at our mooring.

Deb and I got  off to explore the Venice of the North. The little canals were dug by hand to get the peat for fires etc so it would have been a very poor area. Now it is a very popular and wealthy area. As they dug they found lots of goat horns, hence the name Giethoorn.

We walked for hours along canals, over little bridges, beside canals and houses with tulips and all sorts of flowers growing.  And a couple of souvenir shops!!! Little boats ply the canals taking tourists. In summer it must be like dodgem cars!!.  Absolutely beautiful walk thr the canals. Back on Melba and the wind has come up to buffet us around. We head off again tomorrow morning  for Terherne.

  1. What a pretty place! Makes me wonder about flooding though. A lot of water close to houses.

  2. The town looks so pretty. But you look cold!
Been to the dawn service here. No rain- just cold and clear. Really nice service, but I'm not feeling great after the flu injection yesterday. So I sat in the gutter for a part of the service. Lucky I was rugged up and doubt anyone could recognise me! Enjoy.

  3. Truly pretty scenes but a very public existence, me thinks. I trust that you are cosy inside your barge as the rain surrounds. Most atmospheric. Moving ANZAC appropriate music on Classic FM on this lovely day.

  4. Do you have locks to contend with? Very scenic, we are having flu and covid shots tomorrow so hope they are after effects free like previous ones
