Kampen. Day 26. May 4th.
Another glorious sleep in. I'm not wasting the day as it wet, cold and windy outside. Lovely and cosy in my room. Watched the ducks and 13 little chicks while having breaky. Then Deb and I headed to the bike shop to see if I could hire a bike for tomorrow but get it tonight and return Monday as closed tomorrow. No worries so then off to Hema to buy some more under shirts for more warmth. I'm a tad sick of wearing the same old warmish clothes. We walked in hail, then sun. There was a market so I got some bread rolls for lunch.
We then headed to town to check out the museum. Kampen renown for its collection of paintings of the royal family......house of Orange, hence the use of the colour orange for festive occasions. We called into the market again and then for a coffee and hot chocolate.
The bells were playing songs aswell as peeling the hour. Picked up my bike and onto Melba before a very strong wind. Deb and I played Rummikub while sitting in the sun in the wheelhouse. Yep weather all over the place. Then as Remembrance and Liberation day we walked with the people to a sort of cenotaph/memorial where a band played, speeches and wreaths were laid. Quite moving when everyone sang the national anthem. Even stopped along the way to lay flowers at the Jewish synagogue. And the rain and hail stayed off. Home for dinner.

Wonderful to have the time to be part of something so local...and in this case, national. A quiet scene in stark contrast to bombings in Sri Lanka and riots during May Day. A cosy nook on a barge is somewhat special.
ReplyDeleteMemories of being in Amsterdam last year. Enjoy. (Weather is not being very kind?)
