Jekyll Island. Day3. 11th April.

Got up early again to drive to Jekyll Island, one of many islands off the coast of Georgia and a 2 hour drive. We drove on straight to the bike barn and rented some bikes, no gears and back pedal brakes and thick tyres and big, Harley Davidson type handle bars. Took off along the sea and just delightful tracks.

We continued onto the northern most point, through amazing marshland. I imagined alligators around every bend. At the point there was a little shop where we bought hot dogs just to keep us going. We could see St Simon's island in the distance. An island to challenge Martha's vineyard for the rich and powerful.

We headed back through beautiful live oaks with Spanish moss draped over them. So beautiful. We stopped at an old house that belonged to Horton, a mate of Oglethorpe who built a farmhouse and farm. He used oyster shells to mix with mud etc to make tabby walls. A Frenchman eventually took over the island and had a cotton plantation  with lots of slaves. Eventually a group of millionaires took over the island to create the Jekyll ocean club. We rode past beautiful homes and hotels.

We got a bit lost returning the bikes but after about 25miles we were happy to hand them back, so a bit of shopping and head to the wharf for dinner. Crab cakes yummy.
Home again after a 2 hour drive. Another wonderful  day.
