Atlanta Georgia. Day 10. 18th April.
I'm lying here in my Days Inn room at the beginning of the Atlanta airport runway. I reckon they sound like they're going to land in my room!!
So had breaky with the remaining COST friends, checked out and 9 of us headed off in our bus to Atlanta. Very busy traffic as Atlanta is a big city. Arrived at the History centre and we checked out a number of exhibitions. I am always interested in the Civil War and found the north, while against slavery were more against the south trying to secede. 4 year war culminated in the battle of Atlanta which saw the south defeated. I also browsed through the American Indian section. The painting of the trail of tears was very sad as the tribal leaders sold off their land to the greedy and lying whites and were moved into reservations.
We then moved to the Cyclorama , a huge mural of the Atlanta battle with models in the front making it look 3D. This one was painted by a group of Germans with the intention of touring and making money. Lots of detail and a very real representation of the battle.
We then walked through lovely spring gardens to the Swan house for lunch. Many a southern lady was there eating and drinking tea. Very refined. I had crab cakes followed by key lime pie and a pot of tea. Just as well as nothing here to eat. Have had a cuppa and a Tennessee goo goo bar.
We then headed to my motel at the airport through terrible traffic. More goodbyes and into my room. Not as salubrious as I'm used to but close to the airport and the 5.30am shuttle will take me to the airport to take the flight back to Dallas to catch my ongoing flights to Lisbon. It will be a long day/night tomorrow but have downloaded a few books to keep me going. Next time I write I should be in Portugal with my friends Marianne and JO.
