Day 9. National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

Up reasonably early for our drive to Cincinnati. About a 3 hour trip there. And as we got closer Paula was concerned that it seemed to be closed, despite checking the website. Phone message said it was closed so we headed to Union Museum which it appeared you could only go to if you had children! Fortunately they did inform us that the other centre was open. Got a park right out the front and in we went.
An amazing exhibition of slavery, which the Brits actually started in the US. After the revolution bringing africans in was banned which started the buying and selling of slaves already in the US. So families were split up. To avoid this many tried to escape along the railway which wasnt trains but a track from house to house until they got to Canada. If they were caught they were sent back and punished and those that helped, often white, were thrown into jail for lengthy terms. The centre also dealt with modern day slavery. Very confronting exhibitions.
By 3 we realised we were hungry so headed to a restaurant across the road where they served delicious burgers and another shandy on tap!!!
Very hot outside but we could see the barges going down the Ohio river to the Mississippi. We drove over to a grog place where I had been before about 10 years ago when I came to a COST conference at Nthn Kentucky uni!!!
Home again and watched some Frankie and Grace.

  1. Sounds like you have switched drinks from last year's Margaritas to Shandies..... - enjoy!

  2. What an interesting day. I think I read about the Underground Railroad in that recent Little Women book that was written from the father’s point of view.
