Day17. Pecos, Santa Rosa and Tucumcari.
A delightful stay in Madrid so off with the roof down on the Santa Fe trail which actually predates Route 66. We stopped at Pecos National Park to view old Indian pueblos. Once a thriving community influenced by the spanish, the fraciscan priests and then the mexicans and finally the US. Fascinating history of wars and domination and treaties returning so much of Mexico to the US. We walked around the ruins and chatted to the guides. This one was free as sponsored by Greer Garson and her US husband, now long gone.
Onto Santa Rosa following the Santa Fe trail and into Tucumcari and Brians choice for tonight, the Blue Swallow Motel. As so much is dying in these tosns bypassed by the interstat the places still on Route 66 have to come up with something special and this motel didnt disappoint. Old 30s look, old cars, garages with murals in to park your car, chenille bedspreads with swallows on and even 30s magazines. A great place. Please excuse the spelling mistakes tonight as I had 2 margharitas with my dinner, mmmm
Off to Amirillo Texas tomorrow.

Hooley Dooley, what a trip you're having!
ReplyDeleteWow - look at the size of those margaritas! Everything in the US is super sized!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea maintaining the "era" at the motel.
